Join me as I share my journey towards a healthier and happier me!
I am not the type of person that has always been exceptionally fit or super big into fitness. I enjoy eating sweets way too much and used to laugh at the idea of exercising.
I would think, why should I put forth all that effort when the results might never come? And when in the world would I ever have the time to go to the gym! It just seemed too hard. I was a busy mom and had no desire to dedicate my precious free time to exercising.
So I’ve had four babies. After each pregnancy, I counted on nursing and eating healthy to bring me back down to my pre-pregnancy weight. I also considered chasing around a toddler to be a legit form of exercise for the day. While those things helped, I never lost as much as I wanted, or should have.
My youngest two kids are only 17 months a part, and since I was not diligent with exercise, my body didn’t have enough time to “bounce back” before my last pregnancy. Before I knew it I was 36 pounds heavier than I was before kids. I sort of accepted my “Mom Body” and tried to make the most of it. I thought I looked fine. Sure, having to buy bigger clothes was annoying and a little depressing, but I never considered myself to be overweight. I was a mom and this was normal.
In June 2016, my husband, John, and I booked a trip to Cancun to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. This trip was the first big trip we would take without the kids, so it was a big deal and we were super excited. Our trip was in November, which meant we had 5 months to get our act together and get in shape for the beach!
Even though John and I had improved our diet, we realized that it just wasn’t enough. We needed to make the commitment to exercise regularly in order to improve our energy levels and overall health.
A family member recommended an exercise program that we could do at home, and only took 25 minutes a day. So we committed to waking up 30 minutes earlier every morning and exercising together.
That right there made all the difference to me. Someone was now exercising along with me and holding me accountable. John is such a great support to me. He pulls me out of bed in the morning, encourages me to eat healthy, and reminds me to drink water! Having that kind of support really keeps me going and I enjoy spending that time with him.
Exercising six days a week became a non-negotiable part of our day, and consistency brought great results.
My before and after pictures were taken in the dressing room of my favorite clothing store. In the after picture (January 2017), I am trying on jeans that are FOUR sizes smaller than the shorts I am wearing in the before picture. WHAT???!!! I couldn’t believe it!
Now, a year and a half later, John and I have continued with our daily exercise and smart nutrition, and we continue to see the results of our hard work.
When I began this journey, my goal was to lose 20 pounds. I was skeptical that I would be able to lose any more than that.
As of January 2018, I have surpassed my goal of losing 20 pounds, and have lost a total of 43 pounds!
I am in better shape than I was before having kids, and I’m so stinkin’ happy with how far I have come!
Now, the number on the scale, or fitting into a tiny pair of jeans isn’t what truly matters. Nor should it be something to obsess over. Knowing that I am making smart choices for my health, and the health of my family, is what really makes me happy about this whole journey.
Waking up early to exercise is STILL a daily struggle for me, but I love the sense of accomplishment that comes from doing something good for myself at the start of each day.
